Tony Faulkner Jazz Orchestra CD now available
“Thad Jones and the Ellington Effect” is a seven part suite of pieces based on the chapters of a Masters dissertation completed some years ago and in which I attempted to show how Thad Jones had been influenced by Duke Ellington both in his writing and arranging, and in the way in which he used the jazz Orchestra he co-led with drummer Mel Lewis from 1966 to 1979.
The orchestra on the CD has the following personnel: Andy Schofield (alto sax, sop. sax, clar.), Tim France (alto sax, flute), Russell van den Berg (tenor sax, sop. sax), Suzanne Higgins (tenor sax, flute), Tony Harper (bari. sax, bass clar.); Bryan Davis, Ryan Quigley, Rob Robson, Henry Lowther, Richard Iles or Graham Hardy (trumpets); Mike Carton, Rick Taylor, John Kenny or Andy Hillier (trombones), Sarah Williams (bass trombone), Mike Walker (guitar), Graham Hearn (piano), Dave Markee (bass) and Peter Fairclough (drums).
It was recorded in June ‘06 at Wildtrax Studios, Co. Durham by Frank Gibbon, using 2″ analogue tape, in a more-or-less ‘live’ situation, with minimal mics and mixing. Mastering was done at Clickstop, Leeds with NO compression - very much a ‘live’ sound.
There will (hopefully) be reviews in the February issues of “Jazz Journal” and “Jazzwise” magazines.
The CD is now available from Amazon.co.uk and CD Baby.
During the three days in the studio we recorded enough material for two CDs. The next issue, “Two Suite - plus two more” will be available around May/June ‘07.
